Things To Avoid Putting In Your Dumpster

JDog Aug 13, 2023

Renting a roll-off dumpster is a smart move when you have a big cleanout ahead of you. It simplifies the job, keeps debris contained, and lets you work at your own pace. But before you start throwing everything in, there is something you need to understand. Not everything belongs in that container. Certain items are prohibited from dumpsters for good reason. Some are hazardous to the environment. Some are illegal to dump. Others create serious safety risks at disposal facilities. Putting the wrong items in your dumpster can result in fines, extra charges, or real harm to the surrounding community. Here is a straight rundown of what stays out of the dumpster and where it should go instead.

Electronics

Old televisions, computers, monitors, and DVD players cannot go in a roll-off dumpster. Electronics contain metals and chemicals that leach into the soil and groundwater when they break down in a landfill. Colorado takes e-waste seriously, and most disposal facilities will not accept it mixed in with general debris. Instead, take electronics to a certified e-waste recycling facility. Many communities also hold periodic collection events specifically for these items.

Tires

Rubber tires seem harmless enough, but they cause serious problems at landfills. They trap methane gas and tend to work their way back to the surface over time, disrupting the entire site. Most disposal facilities outright refuse them. Drop used tires at a tire retailer or a dedicated rubber recycling location instead.

Refrigerators and Air Conditioners

These appliances contain Freon, a refrigerant that damages the ozone layer when released into the atmosphere. Federal law actually requires proper handling and recovery of Freon before disposal. Never put a refrigerator or air conditioning unit in a dumpster. Contact an appliance recycler or your local waste management authority for guidance on legal disposal.

Large Appliances

Washers, dryers, stoves, and dishwashers contain significant amounts of recyclable metal. Dumping them wastes that material and takes up unnecessary landfill space. Many areas offer scrap metal recycling programs or scheduled large-item pickup days. You can also list them for free on local classifieds. Metal scrappers will frequently pick them up at no charge just for the material value.

Batteries

Car batteries and other large batteries contain sulfuric acid and heavy metals that contaminate soil and water when improperly disposed of. Even smaller household batteries add up to a real environmental hazard when they end up in landfills by the thousands. Most auto parts stores and battery retailers accept old batteries for recycling at no cost.

Paint and Household Chemicals

Leftover paint, solvents, cleaning products, and other household chemicals cannot go in a dumpster. These materials leak and spread toxic contamination in landfills and can create dangerous reactions during transport. Most municipalities hold hazardous waste collection days throughout the year where you can drop off these items safely and legally.

Propane Tanks

An empty-looking propane tank is rarely completely empty. Residual gas remains inside and can ignite or explode under pressure at a disposal site. That is not a risk worth taking. Most propane suppliers accept old tanks for proper disposal, and local hazardous waste facilities typically handle them as well.

Asbestos

Older homes in the Denver area may contain asbestos in insulation, flooring, or roofing materials. Disturbing asbestos releases fibers that are a known cause of serious lung disease. This material requires licensed professional removal and transport to a facility approved for asbestos disposal. Never attempt to handle or dump it yourself.

Motor Oil, Pesticides, and Medical Waste

Used motor oil contaminates water sources and harms aquatic life. Many auto shops accept used oil for recycling, even if you changed it yourself at home. Pesticides belong at hazardous waste collection events, not in a dumpster, since they harm far more than the pests they were designed to target. Medical waste, including needles and sharps, requires a proper sharps container and drop-off at a designated medical waste facility.

Mattresses and CFL Lightbulbs

Mattresses take up significant landfill space and many disposal sites restrict them entirely. Look for mattress recycling programs in the South Denver area before you toss one. CFL bulbs contain mercury, a neurotoxin that poses real environmental risk when bulbs break in a landfill. Most major home improvement stores offer free CFL recycling drop-off programs.

Ink Cartridges

These are made from plastics and metals which can take years to decay. When left in landfills, they pose environmental concerns. Office supply stores often have recycling programs. Make a greener choice.
